My youngest child has had some struggles with asthma since he was 10 months old. We have used a combination of oral steroids, nebulizer, and inhaler for him over the years. (he is now 4 and seems to be outgrowing his breathing problems, thank God!)
Early this year we discovered that he needed ***7*** dental fillings! None of my other children had ever had a cavity, so I was pretty surprised.
At our recent visit with our dentist I asked him if the oral steroids could have contributed to my son’s dental problems. What he told me was that not only oral steroids, but nebulizer treatments and inhaler use ALL do the same thing. Basically, they temporarily reduce the amount of saliva, and they create an environment where bacteria thrive. He said that after using an oral or breathing-only form of steroids you should go brush your teeth right away in order to help combat this.
I just thought other moms would want to know about this. I sure wish someone would have told me this before my 4 year old had to have oral surgery for 7 cavities!
